The language is in spots lyrical. The situation the lovers find themselves in is truly romantic and tragic. But it is also an example of this life turned upside down, as the girl is white and poor, while the man is Chinese and rich.
From her disjointed vignettes, I never figured out any of these things. I must have missed the sparkle the critics saw. We return to the ferry, where the Chinaman offers the girl a lift to Saigon. The history of these three characters is brief and intrudes in the midst of the story of the girl and her lover, and is not otherwise explained. We who are now almost old ladies, at least well into our mature years. On that particular day, the fifteen and one-half year old girl was returning to Saigon, as was the twenty-eight-year-old rich "Chinaman" Tony Leung Ka Fai.
I tried appreciating The Lover as a prose poem. Only the male character in the end remains the same, and the girl too, perhaps, as she has written herself.
Again I remember myself, walking hand in hand with a year-old man when I was just sixteen. But what can we do, but go on living? I read it as a memoir of Marguerite Duras. The child tells her own story through much of the book, yet there are also passages such as this one: She takes local transportation, which includes a ferry ride over a branch of the vast Mekong River.
